Viola Sastavickas Scholarship Available

By Bella Caggiano
The Sastavickas Scholarship Committee is accepting applications for the 2021 $1,000 scholarship. The annual scholarship was initiated by the family of Viola Sastavickas in 2007 in memory of their mother, Viola Sastavickas, a life-long Norwood resident and frequent visitor to the Morrill Memorial Library.
“[The scholarship] is a fitting tribute to our beautiful mother and to the library and staff who treated her with great respect and affection,” Sastavickas’ daughter Kathy said.
The scholarship will be awarded to a current or former employee or volunteer of the library. It can be used for undergraduate or graduate school, a formal course of study, or enrichment opportunity (continuing education).
Applicants need to fill out an application, a brief essay describing educational goals and how the funds will be used, and one letter of recommendation. A recommendation will be made by a three-person selection committee comprising of the library board of trustee chairperson, library director, and the library staff association’s president. That recommendation will be approved by the Board of Trustees. Decisions will be based on the quality of the request, financial need, and the individual’s contribution to the library.
An application for the Viola Sastavickas Scholarship is available at the Morrill Memorial Library, 33 Walpole St. (Rte. 1A), and on the library’s website at www.norwoodlibrary.org, (search: Sastavickas Scholarship). For more information, call, 781-769-0200. Applications are due by Monday, May 10. A final decision will be made by June 30, and funds distributed by August, 2021.
