South Norfolk Mental Illness Family and Friends Support Group

Mental illness is a label for a variety of diseases of the brain. Often it strikes in late adolescence, devastating the afflicted person and the family. The South Norfolk Mental Illness Family and Friends Support Group is composed of such families who find mutual support and join together to advocate for their loved ones. All families in the South Norfolk Area who are dealing with mental illness and their loved ones are welcome. Observing the Covid-19 precaution of wearing a mask while indoors during the meeting is appreciated. For more information, call Ray at  508-668-2941.

The Guide Film (Ukraine Relief Fundraiser)

THE GUIDE was shot in 2012 by Ukrainians and released in Ukraine in 2014. It was not released theatrically in the US or Western European countries. The story of this two-hour drama is set in the 1930s and revolves around an American boy who is visiting Ukraine with his father. Young Peter becomes caught up in events connected to Soviet efforts to exterminate millions of Ukrainians. The director of THE GUIDE is Oles Sanin, a leading figure in what has become a sizable Ukrainian film industry. Sanin has remained in Kyiv during the war.
Both Sanin and the producers at Pronto Films have agreed that THE GUIDE may be screened without payment to them as long as ticket proceeds or other donations go to Ukraine relief. Tickets available at the door. $10 per ticket.

The Chicken Bake will be served in the Post lounge room. The meal will include a one-half Barbequed Chicken, with corn on the cob and a baked potato. Dessert is also included to finish the meal. The cost is only $12 per person. Tickets are available to purchase at the VFW.

Milestones in Massachusetts w/ The History Project (Virtual)

This is a Zoom presentation by historian and Executive Director of The History Project, Joan Ilacqua, in honor of Pride Month. Massachusetts was both the first state to legalize same-sex marriage and the first state to support transgender protections through popular vote. Join Joan Ilacqua, Executive Director of The History Project, for a special Pride presentation and discussion about the history of legal prosecution and protection of the LGBTQ+ community in Massachusetts from the Puritans to the present. This presentation will highlight early laws against queer activity, LGBTQ movement building throughout the 20th century, and the continued fight for rights in Massachusetts. Registration is required. The Norwood Council on Aging is celebrating 50 years!

Art in the Park

Over 100 pieces of artwork created by talented local and regional artists will be displayed and judged. Their categories include oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, mixed media, photography, and drawing. Also included in the event will be artisan tables with textile, glasswork, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, clothing, artwork, and wood. Around the gazebo you can view and purchase the very popular bin work including unframed originals, photographs, and prints created by the artists. Admission is FREE.

Ice Cream 5K & Family Fun Run
Willett School

You can run individually or as a family. This is a timed race, and every person registered will get a coupon for ice cream! The first 150 registered runners will receive an additional give away! The event will include music, inflatables, a family kickball game, and more! Prizes for winners in their age divisions. 5K Runners: cost is $30 until June 19, $35 day of. Juneteenth Celebration

The Town of Norwood will celebrate their FIRST Juneteenth with Norwood Police Officer Geoffrey Baguma as the event’s primary organizer. The event activities  include art displays, dramatic performances, singing, dancing, and poetry. African American businesses will be spotlighted as well as educational material and historical data provided to those who attend. Talks are also in the works with Ancestry.com in hopes they will be available to give people the option of researching their roots.

Drag: Behind the Makeup

The Morrill Memorial Library is offering an in-person event with drag performers Loo D’Flyest Priestly and Ivanna, in honor of Pride Month. Have you ever wondered what it’s like for performers to transform into their drag characters? Join House of Hors drag performers Loo D’Flyest Priestly and Ivanna for a live drag makeup session. Over the course of the evening, Loo and Ivanna will answer questions and chat with the audience while applying their makeup and getting into character. Library Lecture: Registry of Deeds

Norwood Notable Land Records: People, Places and Properties is part of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of Norwood that looks at the stories of the people and places of Norwood behind the land records recorded at the Norfolk Registry of Deeds. The history of Norwood from its early years to present day will be highlighted. The places chosen in the booklet and storyboards tell a piece of the story of the Town of Norwood. The individuals chosen in the booklet and the storyboards really represent all who lived in Norwood and make it a special place to live. The singing program headlined by The Singing Trooper -retired Massachusetts State Trooper Dan Clark - will entertain and help celebrate Norwood’s 150th Anniversary. Doors to the Town Hall will be opened at 6:30 PM to view the storyboards of Norwood’s people, places and properties with an event program that is highlighted by a singing performance by The Singing Trooper.
