Scam Alert from Norwood PD

Jul 31, 2025 08:39AM ● By Staff Member

We are asking the public to be advised of a text message scam where individuals are receiving fraudulent messages claiming to be from the RMV. These messages often state that the recipient has unpaid fees or violations and pressure them to click on a link to make a payment to avoid consequences like license suspension.

The RMV will never text you asking for payment, according to the RMV.

As always, NEVER click on the link from these messages. It is also advised to delete these text messages from your phone. The FBI warns, these types of text scams will continue and possibly involve claims of being a law enforcement agent. We also recommend to be wary of any text that requires immediate action or threatens possible penalties if no response as well as suspicious texts from unknown numbers.

The bureau’s advice in the latest attacks in Washington State could apply to any attacks: “Scammers always prey on people’s fears. They’re always opportunistic.” And that opportunism pays off.” They try to ratchet up that sense of urgency so that you don’t think about what you’re doing and then they just send the money.”
