Don’t Fear the Fluff

Norwood’s Girl Scout Troop 70654 is getting the word out about adopting big dogs! This troop of Girl Scouts spent their fifth-grade year researching the needs of local animal shelters as part of their Bronze Award Project.

They visited two local shelters and learned about the animals and the shelters’ biggest challenges. One major problem stood out: big dogs are the least likely to be adopted. Shelter staff explained that many people have incorrect assumptions about what it’s like to have a big dog.

Some common big dog myths include: big dogs need a big house and yard; big dogs are aggressive; and big dogs need tons of exercise.

The shelters explained that these worries are mostly myths. In fact, many big dogs are happy in small spaces or apartments, as long as they get regular walks or trips to the park. They also said that a dog’s personality, not its size, is what really matters when choosing a pet. The shelter staff work closely with families to help match them with the right dog. Whether you’re looking for a friendly, cuddly, athletic, or lazy dog, they can help you find the perfect fluffy (or not-so-fluffy!) new best friend.

The troop took their message to the Norwood Farmer’s Market last month spreading awareness about big dogs being adopted less and handed out pamphlets they made. They sold handmade bracelets, did crafts with kids, and donated all the proceeds to the local animal shelters they visited.

A special thanks to the Animal Rescue League of Boston in Dedham and Schultz Guest House for welcoming us and educating us about shelters’ needs.
