It’s officially the holiday season. The entertainment industry portrays this time  filled with days of leisurely baking and decorating cookies, fun shopping excusions to find just the right gifts, implementing online videos of creative wrapping ideas, and parties overflowing with laughter. But in reality, this month can feel like  weeks of checklists and social obligations, mixed with a little mayhem.

In Norwood, however, an annual event offers an opportunity to slow down and experience a genuine moments filled with gratitude and remembrance.

The Circle of Hope Foundation (COH) will host its 24th annual Luminary Night on Saturday, Dec. 6, 4 to 6 p.m., on the Norwood Town Common. Described by many as “magical,” the evening glows with community spirit and heartfelt reflection.

“The candles will be lit beginning at 4 p.m., and the Foundation members welcome residents and friends to come out and see this beautiful sight,” the Circle of Hope committee said in a press release.

Residents are invited to gather at the Town Gazebo to pay tribute to family members and friends, or simply unite in support of Norwood’s compassionate community. Luminaries are purchased in remembrance of a loved one, each bearing a brief message of life, hope, remembrance, or a tribute to the season. The glowing bags line the sidewalks surrounding the Walter Dempsey Bandstand, creating a breathtaking and uplifting scene.

Last year, Norwood’s town center shimmered with more than 2,000 luminaries and raised $10,000 for local residents in need.

Luminaries can be purchased in advance for $5 at Murph’s Place Restaurant, 58 Broadway, Norwood, or by sending a check made payable to The Circle of Hope at P.O. Box 421, Norwood, MA 02062. Orders can also be placed online at norwoodcoh.org.

The Circle of Hope Foundation was established in 1998 in memory of Norwood resident Michelle Kennedy, who battled leukemia. During her illness, the community came together to support her and her family—many who didn’t even know her personally. The foundation was formed in her honor to preserve that spirit of generosity, donating funds to Norwood families facing catastrophic medical illness. Since its inception, COH has donated more than $1.5 million to local residents in need.

Music from Norwood’s beloved Colonial Boys and the Norwood Alumni Choir will fill the air as residents stroll along the illuminated pathways of the Town Common, searching for their personal luminary or pausing to pay tribute to others during this season of peace, hospitality, and love.

It is a magnificent sight to walk through the heart of Norwood as the luminaries radiate along the walkways. Even those who did not purchase a luminary often make a special trip to the Town Common to view the display, read the touching messages, and take a quiet moment of remembrance. Luminary Night is truly an evening of community and compassion that captures the spirit of the holidays.
