As December settles in across the northeast, the holidays aren’t the only thing that deserve your attention, your home does, too! A few small maintenance steps now can help protect your biggest investment and keep things running smoothly through the cold months ahead. 

Here are a few simple but important tips:

Protect Your Pipes

Frozen pipes are one of the most common (and costly) winter mishaps. Be sure to insulate pipes in unheated areas such as basements, attics, or garages, and let a slow drip run on especially frigid nights to keep water moving and keep the doors open under the sink to let the home’s heat easily reach those pipes.

Clean and Inspect Your Heating System

If you haven’t already, replace your furnace filter and schedule a professional heating system inspection. A clean filter not only improves air quality but can also help reduce energy costs during those long winter stretches.

Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

With heating systems running and fireplaces in use, make sure your detectors are working properly. Replace batteries and test each unit; it’s a simple five-minute task that can save lives.

Seal Out the Drafts

Cold air can sneak in around doors, windows, and electrical outlets. Use weather stripping, caulk, or draft stoppers to keep your home warm and your energy bills down.

Clear Gutters and Roof Edges

If you haven’t already done so this season, clean out any remaining leaves and debris. This prevents ice dams, which can lead to roof leaks and costly repairs.

Prepare for Snow

Make sure shovels, snow blowers, and ice melt are ready to go before the first big storm hits. Stock up early. Supplies tend to sell out when snow is in the forecast and you will be fully prepared while others are scanning the shelves!

Clean Out Dryer Vents

This is one task that’s easy to forget — but so important. Lint buildup in dryer vents is a major fire hazard year-round. Also, in winter, make sure the exterior vent isn’t blocked by snow or ice. When snow piles up against the outside vent, it can trap moisture, cause your dryer to work harder, or even back up exhaust gases into the home. Keep that vent area clear and check it after every storm.

Don’t Forget Your Outdoor Spaces

Bring in or cover outdoor furniture, store hoses, and shut off exterior water lines to prevent freezing.
