A simple evening drive to enjoy Christmas lights unexpectedly highlighted an important issue for homeowners. While a brightly decorated house is easy to find during the holidays, the situation changes dramatically in an emergency, especially at night, when clear house numbers, not decorations, guide first responders.

Firefighters, paramedics, and police officers rely on clear, visible addresses to reach residents quickly during emergencies. Yet too often, house numbers are hidden by shrubs, poorly lit, or missing altogether - turning a routine response into a frustrating search when time is critical.

Emergency officials stress a simple message: don’t play hide-and-seek with the people who are trying to help you.

Making sure your house number is easy to spot can save precious minutes in an emergency. Numbers should be clearly visible from the street, both during the day and at night. 

• Make sure the numbers are visible from the street, day or night

• Use reflective numbers for hard to see areas

• Place numbers near a light source if possible (or add a light source)

• Numbers should contrast with the color of the home and be at least 3” high

• Keep trees, shrubs, flowers, parked vehicles or decorations free from blocking the numbers 

For residents in rural areas, address visibility is especially important. Emergency vehicles may be traveling longer distances on unfamiliar roads. Clearly marking your address on a mailbox or on a post at the entrance to your driveway can make all the difference.

Safety experts also recommend posting your address by every telephone in your home. In stressful situations, even longtime residents can momentarily forget their own address. Having it written down ensures clear communication with a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

Finally, make sure all family members, especially children and seniors, know how to call 9-1-1 and what information to provide.

A visible house number may seem like a small detail, but in an emergency, it can help first responders find you faster, do their jobs more effectively, and ultimately save lives.
