Norwood Mural Celebrates Stories of the Community

Oct 01, 2026 11:47AM ● By Michele Taranto

A new splash of color in Norwood is telling a story that has been generations in the making.

On Aug. 29 during Norwood Day, the Norwood Cultural Council unveiled Family Tree, a public mural created by local artist Tara Bilotta. It is located adjacent to the parking lot behind Norwood Town Hall. Built around the theme "Many Stories, One Norwood," the artwork celebrates the people, history, industries, accomplishments, and natural features that have helped shape the town, while also looking toward its future.

Learn more about the mural and the Norwood Cultural Council through an interview with Norwood Cultural President Jonathan Cardoni.

What was the inspiration behind creating this mural, and how did the idea first come about?

The Norwood Cultural Council had an opportunity to create a special project using a portion of funds from the Mass Cultural Council.

We decided on creating a piece of public art and that it would take the form of a mural. We chose the theme Many Stories, One Norwood. If nothing else art should tell a story.

Why was this location chosen for the mural?

Another prominent location was chosen but we were unable to get a commitment from the property owner.

John Carroll of Caroll Advertising had already offered to donate the cost of printing the final mural. We found out he owned a great location and when asked if we could use the space he immediately agreed.

Who is the artist, and how was the artist selected?

Local artist Tara Bilotta was selected from among seven artists who submitted ideas through a public call for artists.

Tara's idea matched our theme and her style and execution is perfect for conveying our story.

What does the mural depict, and is there a particular story or meaning behind the design?

The mural called "Family Tree" represents aspects of the Town's past, present and future. It celebrates the diversity and ingenuity of our citizens.

Were there specific Norwood people, places, history, or community themes that influenced the artwork?

There are a great many items hidden and not so hidden within the image that represent industries, people, nature, accomplishments, and sacrifice that are important to our town.

6. How long did the project take from the original idea to the August 29 unveiling?

The project began in the fall of 2025 as the Council discussed how to create our special public art project.

Who was involved in making the mural possible?

The members of the Norwood Cultural Council of course and the artists who submitted ideas. Community Development Director Sarah Dixon and Economic Development Director Joe Collins were involved from the beginning.

Town Managers, The Board of Selectmen, and the Planning Board helped.

John Carroll of Carroll Advertising donated the cost of printing the vinyl and helped secure a discount for the installation. He also allowed us to use his building for the final location.

Dedham Savings made a generous donation towards the project.

The Women's Community Committee donated funding to allow us to print posters, greeting cards and fine art prints featuring the mural. These are available from the Council at our booth at the Norwood Farmers Market Tuesdays, 2-6 p.m., through Oct. 20.

We also received donations from One Local bank and many individuals.

What was the reaction from the community at the unveiling?

There were very positive reactions everywhere we have shown images of the mural and at the unveiling itself.

What do you hope people feel or think about when they see the mural?

We hope that people realize what a wonderful Town we have with many wonderful people and that there is much more that connects us than divides us.

Do you see public art as a way to make Norwood Center and other areas of town more vibrant and inviting?

Public art has proven to create a strong community identity and to be a draw for people outside of town to visit us.

Is this mural part of a larger effort to bring more public art to Norwood?

Part of the town's recently adopted Comprehensive Plan includes adding public art. The Norwood Cultural Council hopes to facilitate many more pieces.

What role do you think arts and culture play in building a stronger sense of community in Norwood?

Art has always brought communities together and it creates a sense of pride for the residents.

What are some Cultural Council programs or projects residents may not know about?

Last year we supplied grants to 47 organizations and individuals providing art, culture, science, heritage, and other programs through the schools, the library and other town organizations. Programs include art instruction, history presentations, music, dance, and cultural events. We hope to expand that in coming years.

What other events, programs, or projects does the Council have planned for the coming year?

We have just begun the deliberation about our next special projects and are just now receiving applications for our grant program. We look forward to announcing these programs over the next weeks and months.

How can local artists, musicians, writers, performers, or other creative residents become involved with the Cultural Council?

Norwood Cultural Council meets the first Monday of each month between September and June. The public is always welcome.

There is a larger program we hope to start soon that will engage many people throughout town and will create many volunteer opportunities. We can be contacted through our page on the Towns website or at [email protected]

When/how/why was the council created?

All communities in Massachusetts have a Local Cultural Council tied to the states Mass Cultural Council. These programs began in the 1980s as part of the Lottery Arts Funding program.
